Why should I put a funeral plan in place?

In 2019, the average cost of a funeral was £3785*. This figure is increasing on an annual basis, and there may not always be sufficient funds available to cover such costs. This can often lead to difficulties for your loved ones, and they may have to assist with your funeral costs themselves.

A funeral plan allows you to fix the cost of your funeral at today’s prices. They can be a simple and thoughtful way to provide for you and your family, and allow you to take care of the things you would prefer not to pass on to your family after you’ve gone e.g. funeral costs, and the stress of making detailed arrangements. Instead, you give your family the comfort and reassurance that they are carrying out your specific wishes.

When you take out a funeral plan, you have the reassurance that your money is protected. Your money is invested to ensure that whatever happens, there will be sufficient funds available for your funeral to take place as you’ve specified. This provides protection against inflation, and rising costs.

What are the benefits?

PEACE OF MIND

Organising and paying for a loved ones funeral can be very stressful, as well as emotional. By having a pre-paid plan in place, you are able to pay for your funeral arrangements in advance so that your family do not have to worry about covering the associated costs themselves. You will also have peace of mind that everything has been sorted, and that your wishes will be adhered to.

GUARANTEED ACCEPTANCE

Unlike some forms of life insurance, pre-paid funeral plan providers do not ask you questions about your medical history or current health. If you have been advised by an insurance provider that you are unable to secure life insurance due to a health condition, a pre-paid funeral plan can be a fantastic alternative as you are guaranteed to be accepted.

FLEXIBILITY

Pre-paid funeral plans do not have to be paid in a single payment. There are many affordable, and flexible options available. You can pay over a period of 12 months, or by regular monthly instalments over a number of years. There will always be an option that is suitable for you, and your financial circumstances.

PLAN YOUR FUNERAL

Whilst freezing the costs of a funeral can be a huge benefit of pre-paid funeral plans, it can also allow you to plan the event to your very own specifications and wishes. You can ensure that your funeral is carried out in exactly the way you want it to be, and you can take away some of the pressure off your family at what would be a very difficult time for them.

INHERITANCE TAX

A pre-paid funeral plan falls outside of an individual’s estate for inheritance tax purposes. This can be particularly useful for those who may have an inheritance tax liability.

SAVE MONEY

Funerals can be expensive, and the prices are increasing year on year. By having a pre-paid funeral plan, you are not only making things easier for your loved ones, but also guaranteeing that you will not pay for any future increases in costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a funeral plan?

A pre-paid funeral plan allows you to plan for your funeral in advance, and fix the costs to protect from future inflation and price increases. This will give you the peace of mind that everything has been put in place, and relieve some of the stress for the family.

How can I pay for my funeral plan?

A pre-paid funeral plan can either be paid for in a single payment, or over monthly instalments. We can look at the various options available to ensure that your funeral plan is affordable for you.

Can I buy a funeral plan for someone else?

Yes. You can either purchase a pre-paid funeral plan for yourself, or someone else to ensure that you are fixing the cost and also making it easier for your loved ones.

Will I be asked any questions about my medical history?

No. You are not asked any questions about your current health, or medical history. If you have been declined insurance due to your health, a pre-paid funeral plan can be a perfect alternative as you are guaranteed to be accepted.

Can I make personal requests for my funeral?

Yes. Everyone has very different preferences for their funeral, and a pre-paid funeral can allow you to start making arrangements during your life time to ensure that your wishes are adhered to. You can state whether you’d prefer to be buried or cremated, where you’d like the service to be held, whether you’d like flowers or donations, and even what music or hymns you’d like. By making these decisions now, you will make things much easier for your family later.

Can I choose my own funeral director?

Yes. A number of our clients prefer to use their own funeral director; perhaps one that has been used for a relative previously. If you are unsure, or you do not have a preference, one can be assigned to you within your area.

What happens when I die?

When you have a pre-paid funeral plan in place, it just takes one phone call and it is all taken care of. Your family would just have to contact the funeral director, and they will sort everything out.

What happens if I die overseas?

A pre-paid funeral plan would not cover the cost of a funeral abroad, or the cost of repatriating the deceased. It is really important that you ensure your travel insurance would cover for such a situation.
